Masters of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language (M TESOL) – Part-time Study

[Jointly offered by the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and SEAMEO RELC]

Victoria University of Wellington’s Masters of TESOL programme attracts teachers from around the Asian region who seek to advance their knowledge and skills in teaching English as a second or foreign language. The programme is highly regarded and strongly oriented to the practical needs of language teachers, while also helping teachers engage with the latest research in language education. It is delivered by internationally-recognised researchers and grounded in their own experience as language teachers and teacher educators. It is ideally suited to teachers who wish to advance their careers and grow in their leadership potential in the field.

The programme aims to provide graduates with the skills to:

  • Read, evaluate and apply research and theory in language education to particular contexts and learning needs
  • Prepare and critically assess teaching materials;
  • Plan a programme of language study;
  • Understand and respond to individual learner differences in language learning;
  • Monitor and assess learning progress;
  • Advise teachers on effective language teaching procedures and interventions;
  • Plan and carry out their own small-scale research studies.

The programme consists of 12 modules (180 points) of part-time study over 3 years. Participants can study on-campus at RELC or online synchronous learning via Zoom, or in a combination of both, at their own pace. The programme will lead to the award of a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages conferred by the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHER LEADERS

In most educational contexts, teacher educators and ELT Heads of Language Departments are often drawn from the ranks of experienced teachers and thrust into the role of developing teachers with very little professional knowledge of how professional development and in-service training should be managed.

This course is for teacher leaders engaged in planning professional development programmes for in-service ELT teachers or teacher educators in leadership positions.
