Course 415: Specialist Certificate in Discourse Analysis and Language Education

05 - 23 November 2007

(Important: This document should be read by all applicants prior to completing the application form for admission as a candidate to the Specialist Certificate Course.)

Rationale ^TOP

In the study of language, some of the most interesting questions arise when we examine the way language is used in real contexts rather than in the separate study of its grammatical, phonological and semantic components. When we, as language users and teachers, attempt to make sense of what we read and hear around us by connecting the key elements of text structure and meaning together, we are undertaking discourse analysis.

The overall aim of the discourse analyst is to gain a better understanding of how people communicate by examining the features of natural discourse. These features may well be different from what language teachers and textbook writers have assumed from their personal intuitions about language. Thus, with a clearer picture of natural discourse, language teachers will be in a better position to evaluate what and how they currently teach, and to improve on what they do in the classroom.
