Postgraduate diploma in TESOL

Introduction ^TOP

The RELC Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a part-time course, designed to allow English teachers greater flexibility in upgrading their skills. As holders of the RELC Diploma, participants will have increased opportunities to join MA courses at a number of universities that accept the RELC Postgraduate Diploma as partial completion of their higher degree courses.

The course is for experienced graduate teachers who are currently teaching English at primary and secondary schools, as well as those teaching at the tertiary level. The course is conducted over a one-year period.

Aims ^TOP

  • To provide English teachers with an opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in ELT
  • To develop awareness of current theories of language teaching
  • To provide a career path for English teachers who want to pursue higher degree programmes in language teacher education.

 

Objectives ^TOP

Upon completion of the course, the participants should:

  • have knowledge of the principles of analysis of language, of linguistic theories on the structural, psychological and social aspects of language and an awareness of how this knowledge can contribute to language teaching

  • have an overview of the main current theoretical approaches to explaining second language acquisition and development

  • have an understanding of the major approaches and methods in second language teaching


  • have knowledge of the principles of basic statistical methods for carrying out simple statistical analyses


Course Content ^TOP

This course consists of six modules. Three one-week workshops will be conducted by RELC lecturers (one for every two modules). After each workshop, there will be a two-month self-study and assignment period. The six modules, each worth six credits, are as follows:

  • Grammar in Discourse
  • Language Acquisition: Social & Psychological Dimensions
  • Language Testing
  • Research Methodology
  • Teaching Listening & Speaking
  • Teaching Reading & Writing

On-line Learning Support ^TOP

RELC lecturers will be available for consultation by email as well as in person. In addition, a web community will be specially created for this course, through which participants will be able to download course materials and additional lecture notes, post questions on the web, and discuss issues raised in the sessions.

Assessment ^TOP

Course participants are requred to:

  • attend all class sessions
  • reach a satisfactory standard in the assignmenta dn examination questions related to each module. The marks for each module comprise 60% assignment and 40% examination
