Introductory Course In Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages (TESOL)

Course Description ^TOP

The Introductory Course in TESOL is a thirty-hour course which provides participants with an overview of what Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) involves. It is not a course which leads to any formal teaching qualification. There is no assessment; however, participants will be expected to prepare for a peer teaching session, which provides the opportunity to experiment with some of the teaching techniques presented on the course.

 

Objectives ^TOP

  • Overview of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • Introduction to some commonly-used approaches, techniques and materials in the teaching of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, speaking, writing, listening and reading.


Target Audience ^TOP

The course is meant for people who:

  • are considering applying for the Certificate in TESOL but, before making the time and financial commitment, would like a ‘taster’ to make an informed decision about whether this is an area of work in which they would feel comfortable.
  • have no plans to make a career out of teaching, but see themselves teaching English informally, especially overseas, and would like to develop some basic language teaching skills and become familiar with published teaching material.

Class Schedule ^TOP

Classes are conducted from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

 

 

Topics ^TOP

The following topics will be covered:

  • The needs of the adult language learner

  • Classroom management

  • Language awareness (Grammar and discourse)

  • Teaching pronunciation

  • Teaching the four macro skills

  • Teaching vocabulary

  • Dealing with learner errors

  • Selecting, evaluating, supplementing and adapting published material

  • Some peer teaching

  • Some observation of live classes, if possible/appropriate
