| 1 General Aim ^TOP This course is for practising teachers, private tutors or intending teachers who teach or plan to teach in ESL/EFL situations. It aims to develop their teaching skills and familiarize them with recent issues and trends in TESOL methodology. The course will emphasize the practical aspects of TESOL with essential theoretical knowledge

2 Required Courses ^TOP a Methodology Second and foreign language learning and teaching; communicative language techniques; teaching grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing; instructional materials preparation and evaluation; lesson planning; correction techniques; peer teaching. Assessment: Assignments and Written Exam b Structure of English Standard grammar terminology; sentence structure; articles; modality; the tense system; discourse analysis; highlighting form for learners; checking meaning. Assessment: Written Exam c Syllabus Design and Materials Preparation This course examines the unique characteristics, needs, interests and strengths of the learner with reference to methodology and materials preparation and course design. The course also considers the role of the teacher and provides a hands-on experience in the development of course outlines and syllabi.Assessment: Project d. Classroom Management and Educational Technology Classroom Management in language teaching; printed visuals; projected visuals; films and video; audio materials; selecting and using appropriate aids for an ESL/EFL class Assessment: Project e Language Testing and Evaluation Basic concepts and principles of language testing; constructing and analyzing language tests; testing and evaluation in an ESL/EFL programme; testing communicative competence Assessment: Project f Phonetics and Teaching of Spoken English Sounds; phonetics symbols and transcriptions; techniques in teaching stress, rhythm and intonation Assessment: Written Exam g Seminar There will be a seminar on some practical aspect of Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages, given by the Manager of the Language Teaching Institute.h Teaching Practice Participants will do peer teaching on a regular basis. Where possible, teaching practice with RELC students will be arranged. 3 Class Attendance ^TOP Classes are held from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Course members should note that (1) they are expected to do their assignments, projects, group discussions, etc. outside of this schedule; (2) during the teaching practice week, participants may be expected to come in early.A candidate should attend at least 90% of all components. The 10% permissible absence must be covered by medical certificates and other certified documents. 4 Written Examinations ^TOPPaper 1 Teaching Methodology 5 Course Projects ^TOP Every candidate will be required to submit a written project on each of the following components: a) Language Testing and Evaluation b) Syllabus Design and Materials Preparation c) Classroom Management and Educational Technology Note: Candidates will be given up to two weeks after the end of the course to complete the projects. 6 Special Benefits ^TOP RELC Library and Information Centre ServicesThe RELC Library and Information Centre has an excellent collection of multi-media resources useful in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages. There are books and printed materials, tape and disc recordings, film-strips, cineloops, slides, microfilms, microfiches, games and kits. The specialised collection is one of the finest in the world containing materials on various aspects on linguistics and language teaching, language planning, bilingual education and information on major languages in Southeast Asia and certain other foreign languages. The Institute has arranged with the RELC Library and Information Centre to extend its facilities to its course members doing the Certificate Course in TESOL. 7 Award of Certificate ^TOP Award of Certificate To qualify for the Certificate in TESOL, a candidate must a) satisfy class attendance requirement b) pass the written examinations c) pass the required course projects d) pass the required teaching practice For those eligible, certificates will be issued two months after all examinations and projects have been submitted. 8 Admission ^TOP1 Applicants should have completed at least the “A” Level examination or its equivalent with a good grade in English. Preference will be given to those with a university degree. 2 Applicants should preferably have some English language teaching experience. 3 Applicants who are non-native speakers should have a satisfactory command of English to be able to do the course. 4 Applicants will be required to attend an interview and sit for an entrance test before admission. Head Language Education & Research Department SEAMEO Regional Language Centre 30 Orange Grove Road Singapore 258352 For applicants in Singapore Provided you meet the minimal educational requirements, you will be required to attend an interview. At the interview, you will be given an academic writing task and some language awareness tasks. You will be informed immediately if you have or have not been offered a place on the course.For applicants outside Singapore, unable to attend a face-to-face interview Together with your application, please provide the following:· Handwritten scripts of about 250 words each, answering the following in a formal academic style: a. What do you think adult learners of English as a Foreign Language mean when they refer to ‘a good teacher’?b. What are your expectations of the Certificate in TESOL course and how do you expect to use the knowledge and skills you acquire on the course? · A cassette tape recording of about 5-10 minutes, introducing yourself, talking about your educational background, your foreign language learning experience and your work experience.Your application will be assessed and, if offered a place on the course, arrangements will be made for a short telephone call, to ensure that you are fully informed of the nature of the course. b. Places on the course are limited and a place is secured by making a S$200 deposit within a week of the interview. You are therefore advised to submit your application as far as possible in advance of the commencement date. The balance of the fees is payable 4 weeks before the commencement of the course. Cheques are payable to ‘SEAMEO Regional Language Centre’The deposit will be refunded if an applicant informs the SEAMEO RELC in writing at least 4 weeks before the commencement of the course that they wish to withdraw their application. c. SEAMEO RELC reserves the right to cancel a course if there are insufficient suitable applicants. The S$200 deposit is fully refundable in this case.
