BATTLE
OF MACTAN
A Portuguese named Ferdinand
Magellan rediscovered the Philippines on March 17, 1521. Magellan
accidentally saw the Philippines on his voyage to find Moluccas or
Spice Island. Such serendipity! Lapu-lapu, a village chieftain, fought
strongly against the intruders in the Battle of Mactan where Magellan
was killed.

(Fort Santiago)
Spending
his last few years on earth, Dr. Jose P. Rizal was incarcerated here
in Fort Santiago, Manila for a month before he was executed on December
30, 1895 in Luneta Park.

AGUINALDO
SHRINE
Gen.
Emilio Aguinaldo, the 1st President of the Philippine Republic declared
Philippine Independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. Aguinaldo is
best remembered with his famous line: "We may lose hope in winning
this battle for freedom because of inadequate force in terms of weapon,
but one thing is never lost, our dream to die for the cause of true
independence. This is where the Philippine flag was first raised.

BAY
Manila Bay, also famous for its nostalgic sunset, turned into a massive
battlefield between United States and Spain. The Americans defeated
the Spanish fleet led by Admiral Patricio Montojo on May 1, 1898.

Emilio Aguinaldo was declared the first president of the Philippine
Republic on January 1, 1899 at the Cavite Shrine in Cavite. The Philippine
Republic is the first Republic in Asia.

NA BATO
Here
a group of Filipino soldiers under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo hid from
the American soldiers who ran after them. The first President, Emilio
Aguinaldo declared the government's transformation into a Republican
Government thru the Pact of Biak na Bato in June 1898.

The Constitution of the
Republican Government was drafted on September 15, 1898 in the Barasoain
Church. It is also known as the Malolos Constitution because the church
is located in Malolos, Bulacan.

MOUNT
SAMAT
The town of Pilar, Bataan takes pride of having Mt. Samat's gigantic
cross also known as the "Dambana ng Kagitingan" (Altar
of Valor). Erected in April 1942, the cross symbolizes the heroic
& courageous defense made by the fatigued, hungry & sick Filipino
and American soldiers in regaining our freedom during World War II.

LANDING
“I SHALL RETURN!”--- Gen. Mc Arthur’s famous line
as he promised the Filipinos he would return immediately to free the
Filipinos from colonizers. The Filipinos were filled with another
big hope when Mc Arthur finally returned in October 1944 landing in
Leyte.

PEOPLE
POWER
A snap presidential election was held with Ferdinand Marcos and Corazon
Aquino in contention. Marcos was proclaimed winner by the National
Assembly despite widespread protest. This led to the bloodless People
Power Revolution on February 27, 1986 that ended the 20-year rule
of Marcos.

CENTENNIAL
CELEBRATION
In 1998, the Philippines celebrated its centenary year as an independent
nation. In 1999 we celebrated one hundred years of the Philippine
Republic, the first constitutional democracy in Asia.
