Singapore is an exciting and cosmopolitan city who situated at a strategic
crossroads between East and West, that offers a unique blend of cultures
and customs. There is a varied selection of events and performances that
caters to all interests, from the classical to the avant-garde. Arts lovers
may take their pick from classical music concerts, internationally-acclaimed
musicals, or outdoor performances.
The
widely-acclaimed Singapore Symphony Orchestra performs the entire
range of orchestral repertoire, with many concerts featuring renowned
soloists and guest conductors. Hailed as a ‘young and brilliant’
orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra has played to enthusiastic
audiences in Asia and Europe, and performs over 90 concerts a
year in two subscription seasons. Home-grown chamber music groups
such as the prize-winning T'ang Quartet have also enriched and
enlivened the classical music scene in Singapore.
The Singapore Arts Festival is held every year in the month of
June. This annual celebration of creativity covers a wide spectrum
of performance, art, dance and music. Arts on the Move takes theatre
beyond the confines of traditional performance venues, to parks,
suburban town centres and pedestrian malls. The Late Night Series,
a hit with the trendy crowd, features experimental works which
blend theatre with multimedia technology.
Singapore
also plays host to the popular World of Music, Arts and Dance
(WOMAD) festival, where the pulsating beats of world music infuse
a colorful display of ethnic crafts and cuisine. Those who prefer
blockbuster entertainment will not be disappointed as extravaganzas
like Cirque du Soleil, Les Miserables and Miss Saigon have made
their appearances here. International superstars like Mariah Carey,
Diana Krall and Faye Wong also make Singapore their obligatory
port-of-call on their Asian tours.
The Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay the new performing arts centre
at Marina Bay boasts a 2,000-seat theatre, a 1,600-seat concert
hall, a 200-seat theatre studio, a 250-seat recital studio, and
outdoor performance spaces. The Esplanade is a national landmark
which reflects Singapore’s commitment to the arts.
Finally, Singapore is trully an exiting city combined by the great
arts and culture from Asia, with Esplanade as the symbol of the
arts od Singapore. Hope in the next, Singapore will perform better
and better show to us as the sign of great awakening of arts in
South-east Asia. *WH
