Title:

Sound It Out! : Phonics in a Comprehensive Reading Program

^TOP

Edition: 3rd ed.

Author:

John F. Savage

Call No:

LB1573.3 S28

"Rather than treating phonics as an end in itself, Sound It Out! shows how phonics fits into the overall process of a child learning to read and helps students understand how phonics can be integrated successfully into an effective classroom reading program.  While it includes a wealth of suggestions for practical classroom applications, the book also has a solid research base so that students will understand what they are doing in the classroom and why they are doing it.  The book includes information about all types of phonics programs and many different approaches to teaching phonics for reading and spelling.  The third edition is thoroughly updated and includes expanded sections on assessment of phonemic knowledge, alphabet knowledge, and phonics."

Title:  Language Learners in Study Abroad Contexts ^TOP
Editors:     Margaret A. DuFon and Eton Churchill
Call No:  P118.2 L3645
"The chapters in this volume offer a privileged window into learner experiences abroad while addressing theoretical issues current in the field of second language acquisition.  They paint a picture of the individual learner struggling with sociolinguistic choices and document the socialization processes collaboratively constructed at the host dinner table.  They also provide insight into how dynamics in both the home and classroom - influenced by individual and program variables - play an instrumental role in facilitating (and sometimes restricting) opportunities to engage in negotiation, to improve one's learning strategies and to increase investment in learning processes."

Title:  Fossilization in Adult Second Language Acquisition ^TOP
Author:     Han Zhaohong
Call No:  P118.2 S89
"This book addresses a fundamental question in second language acquisition research, which is: why are learners, adults in particular, unable to develop the level of competence they aspire to in spite of continuous and sustained exposure to the target language, adequate motivation to learn, and sufficient opportunity for practice?  A long and widely held explanation is that fossilization (Selinker, 1972) has occurred somewhere in the course of learning.  But what exactly is fossilization?  How does it relate to the above question?  By means of a macroscopic and microscopic analysis, the author deconstructs the theoretical construct and evaluates its empirical basis, and in so doing, provides a window into the nature and the etiology of the lack of success observed across the second language learning community as well as within individual learners.  The key issues discussed herein include: conceptual diversities and complexities surrounding fossilization, Critical Period effects, the preprogramming function of native language, methodological approaches to researching fossilization, empirical evidence, the modular nature of fossilization, linguistic structures prone to fossilization, and the relationship between second language teaching and fossilization.  The book is intended for researchers, practitioners, and students in the fields of second language acquisition, bilingualism, and second language teaching."

Title:  Language Policy and Modernity in Southeast Asia : Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand ^TOP
Authors:    Antonio L. Rappa and Lionel Wee
Call No:  P119.32 S64R37
"This volume considers the ways in which modernity challenges and informs the language policies of various Southeast Asian nations.  Using case studies from Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, the authors examine language policies that are explicitly articulated either in the form of State constitutions or in the public proclamations of political leaders.

Particular attention is paid to the ways in which English, often seen as the language of globalization impacts the status of indigenous Southeast Asian language.

Language Policy and Modernity in Southeast Asia will be of interest to researchers in both language policy and contemporary political theory."

Title:  Research Methods in Applied Linguistics : Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methodologies ^TOP
Author:    Zoltán Dörnyei
Call No:  P129 D67
"This is a very practical and accessible book that offers a comprehensive overview of research methodology in applied linguistics by describing the various stages of qualitative and quantitative investigations, from collecting the data to reporting the results.  It also discusses 'mixed methods research', that is, the various combinations of qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

The book provides concise descriptions of the various procedures, varied illustrations and suggestions to help to put the specific techniques into action, and models on how to report the findings of the various methods in seminar papers, dissertations, and research articles."
